Innovo and Sparrows Group provide easily transportable direct laying solution for Saudi umbilical installation

Innodrive 700T electrical RDS installed on the Seven Champion pipe laying vessel.

Client: Subsea7
Project:
Umbilical installation
Location:
Hasbah and Arabiyah fields, offshore Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The challenge

Engineering, construction and services company Subsea7 required equipment and personnel for umbilical cable installation in the Arabiyah and Hasbah gas field development, offshore Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

Vessel to vessel offshore lifting was a requirement, and equipment had to interface correctly with the umbilical reels following onshore testing and installation offshore.

As operations were to commence at short notice during the COVID-19 pandemic, contracting with a local Saudi entity was preferred.

The solution

Innovo and Sparrows worked together on this fast-track project to provide Innovo’s Innodrive Reel Drive System (RDS). Easily transportable in standard containers, the modular RDS was available at short notice from the United Arab Emirates for road transport to KSA.

Innodrive is DAF 1.3 certified for lifting offshore, allowing the system to be assembled and tested onshore, transferred offshore and installed in the field quickly maximising vessel uptime.

Sparrows KSA team provided offshore personnel and assisted with deck layouts for equipment positioning and reel interfacing.

The result

  • Innovo and Sparrows provided safe, reliable equipment and personnel
  • Direct laying achieved with a powerful 700T electrical system
  • Electric RDS provided high levels of energy and kinematic efficiency, requiring less maintenance than a hydraulic system
  • Supply to the client was rapid and, being from a local source, cost-effective
  • Local support improved In-Kingdom Total Value Add (iktva) scoring.
